Business Cards that Get a Re-Re-Action

Proud to be a "cheap skate".
Here at the sweatshop we try to re-use everything. Like any good sweatshop, we're cheapskates. So we collect decorative box board from food packaging, cut it into hand stamped business cards. This type of practice sends a clear message: we're creative and eco friendly.

See the beauty of trash.
Tissue boxes, six pack beer carriers, and chocolate boxes are my favorites. The content can be funky, light hearted or elegant which results in interesting business cards. Recipients try to figure out the orgin and will remember these unique handmade pieces.

Here's how we do it.

1. Design and order a rubber stamp slightly smaller than the standard 2 x 3.5 in business card.

2. Cut a bunch of box board into 2 x 3.5 in sized cards. A paper cutter (10-15 sheet capacity) is handy. A box cutter and straight edge also works.

3. With an ink pad stamp the clean side with your cut cards.

Share your creation with the world, promote yourself, and make things last a little longer.

Our Green Shipping Practices

In celebration of Earth Day we've been writing articles about our green business practices.

From the grocery store to the mailbox.

Clean paperboard boxes like cereal, crackers, or frozen food packaging can be transformed into shipping boxes. Simply turn them inside out and you have a lightweight shipping container that reduces your postage costs and impact on the environment. First, carefully open the glued seam on the box. Some tearing may occur, don't worry you can use tape to seal it later. Reverse the box so the printed side is on the inside.
Re-glue the seam with some paper grade glue. Use binder or paper clips to hold the seam in place as the glue dries. Annie from http://www.anniessweatshop.com/ developed this technique and has used it for over a year. Annie says, "Customers love the creative nature of the box. I love that the box has another adventure before it hits the recycling bin. I've yet to hear about the box breaking in transit."

Trade the plastic for gummed tape.

Try using gummed paper tape (eg. Kraft brand) for sealing your packages. It's totally biodegradable and you're reducing your use of petro based plastics. The gum glue simply needs to be moistened to adhere to a surface. Gummed tape comes in various widths and strengths.

The mailman is your buddy.

Save the time and drive to the post office by shipping from home. You'll need a scale, printer and a PayPal account. You simply weigh your packages, purchase postage through PayPal and print out the labels. See http://www.usps.com/ for more details. According to Annie, "Some bonus features of shipping from home is it makes the accounting easier since it's all in PayPal. Plus, it just seems more efficient if the postal carrier comes to my house everyday anyways."

Take pride in your efforts. Design a label to affix to your packaging that announces your eco practices. For example, Annie like to use, "Annie's Sweatshop reuses packaging creatively."

Recently I was contacted by Honeyshed (their website isn't up yet), "...a new Web site aimed specifically at providing only branded content..." So what does that mean for Annie's Sweatshop? They're filming a segment to include our Natty Neckties and Show Off Dog Collars and Leashes made from recycled and renewable neck ties and fabric. Hippy! I can't wait to see what they come up with.

After weeks of sitting in my closet, I finally posted some T Totes.
It's a strong tote bag made from a retro re purposed t-shirt and canvas.

In other news,mosquitoes are really bad out. Step out onto the lawn and your a bloody buffet. I'm heading out for a mosquito net today. So far, the only bummer about the south is the damn bugs. There's truth to the term "Durty South".

We watched the movie Maxed Out. If you have a credit card, you must watch this movie. It sheds light on the credit card industry, consumerism and it's devastation on American society.

Well the pupp-er-inos need a walkn' before "the oven turns on".

Wow I have been a busy beaver. Here's what I've been up to:

Scored these sweet southern cross stitch guns.

Found this funky remnant Rock and Roll Buddah.

Made another rainbow harness.

Shipped a Natty Necktie Collar (made from recycled neck ties). So I made some more.

I finally finished these napkins. Binding is such a pain, but now I'm a pro.

Oh it's so nice to get tagged by others. Dendelionblue loves my Eco friendly pet beds.

Good day today. Sold an Annie's Sweatshop exclusive, A 32 Caliber Pistol. They're so crazy. Here's the other one. A A 45 Caliber Pistol. Only in the south can you find such things.

I'm also busy sewing away on two big dog harnesses. They're for Samoyed Mix at 40 lbs. I tested one on Eddie, the German Sheppard next door. It fit him! I was so pleased. I thought I was going to have to do a re-design, but I think it's gonna work out.
